Background and Alternate Names
Human Melanocortin Receptor 3 (MC3R), is a 7-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). MC3R is a Class A GPCR and is highly expressed in the hypothalamus. Melanocyte-stimulating hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone are ligands for MC3R. MC3R is involved in regulation of energy homeostasis and mutations in the gene encoding MCR3 are associated with susceptibility to obesity. Human MCR3 protein has ~85-90% sequence homology with mouse MCR3.
